Welcome Mutable Sound, formerly Mutable Press.
What you have in your hands is an amorphous thing. It was once a publishing company. For some time, it considered itself a record label, and it is something like a collection of thoughts and ideas captured upon the uncomfortable ether the Internet provides. You are at the beginning of a long journey. If you think you know what you’re getting yourself into, think again!
We are a bunch of kooks who have known each other for too long to count, and some of us have fallen off the edge of the world on occasion. What has started here has started again and again and is always starting. It started out as a soul band in the lobby of the Coolidge Corner Theater. It started out when someone changed the light bulb in my bedroom. It started out in a diner in Brooklyn when someone else announced that he wanted to publish my meandering writings. And it’s starting again now that we’re middle-aged and made of regrets.
There are old projects and new ones on the way. It’s cold here in the windy city, but there are some tunes on the stereo, and hope breeds like licking snakes everywhere you look. This may be the beginning of the new depression but one company is going to rise out of the ashes with an indeterminate glow and occasional flickering, and that company is Mutable Sound. We got podcasts, and radioplays, books from before and books on the way, albums of our own and albums that have been plucked from out the surrounding void. This is the time of the season.
Imagine that you can see something round the corner, but it doesn’t got an obvious shape yet, and at first you shudder because it could be anything really, but in the end it turns into something much more wonderful than you could ever imagine, even if it never turns a profit. This is us. We live as a kind of way station between thought, sound, and story. There is a philosophical bent to us with our Manifesto of the Month and Three Things, but we are also always all about the sounds on our Mutable Podcast, and Mutable Sound of the Month, and of course our many albums.
But what is Bedroom Theater? Why do we make books? And for whom?
These are questions that even we cannot answer. But we exist. And so do you. And herein lies the miracle.
